“Stop the Death Penalty in Egypt” Releases Its Analytical Report Supported by a Detailed Database on Death Penalty Figures and Statistics in Egypt

The “Stop the Death Penalty in Egypt” campaign has released its third analytical report under the title “The Road to the Gallows,” supported by a detailed database on the death penalty in Egypt.
This statistical-descriptive report builds on the methodology of the previous two reports in the “Road to the Gallows” series, forming the third installment in this data-driven publication series.
“The Road to the Gallows 3” presents a comparative statistical analysis between the years 2023 and 2024. It also outlines the challenges facing the criminal justice system in Egypt, particularly in light of the expedited death sentences and, at times, their swift execution. This report makes a concerted effort to elaborate on the tools and concepts related to observational research and highlights a major challenge faced by researchers and policymakers striving for a better justice system: the lack of accessible information.
The report reveals more than 509 death penalty rulings, including:
- 180 referrals to the Grand Mufti (at both first and second instance levels),
- 281 death sentences (at first and second instance levels),
- 35 upheld rulings by the Court of Cassation,
- and 13 executions carried out.
These figures reflect an alarming expansion in the application of the death penalty in Egypt and underscore the urgent need for comprehensive legal and judicial reform.
The report further reveals that the year 2024 has witnessed a significant surge in the application of capital punishment, with 509 death sentences issued, compared to 454 in 2023. It also confirms that 13 executions have been carried out, within a judicial system that lacks sufficient transparency and fairness.
