The Road to The Gallows 3 … A Descriptive Statistical report on the status of The Death penalty in 2024

This descriptive statistical report continues the path based on the methodology of the previous two reports in the “Road to the Gallows” series, making this the third and completing release in this descriptive statistical series.
The “Road to the Gallows 3” report includes a descriptive statistical comparison between the years 2023 and 2024. The report also frames the challenges of the criminal justice file in light of fast-tracked death sentences, which are sometimes quickly carried out. In particular, this report makes an effort to establish tools and concepts related to observational research and points to the major challenge facing researchers and decision-makers toward a better justice system, namely, the lack of information.
The report reveals more than 509 death penalty rulings, including 180 referrals to the Mufti in both the first and second instances, 281 death sentences in the first and second instances, 35 upheld rulings from the Court of Cassation, and finally, 13 executions.
These figures reflect a worrying expansion in the application of the death penalty in Egypt and confirm the urgent need for comprehensive legal and judicial reforms.
